Andrew Hobbs Claims Fourth Prize at the Skip Barber Race Series Shootout

Andrew Hobbs Claims Fourth Prize at the Skip Barber Race Series Shootout

November 9, 2011
For Immediate Release
Press Contact: Greg Hobbs (414) 737-5705

MONTEREY, Calif. – Andrew Hobbs let the Skip Barber Race Series community know that he will be a driver to watch in 2012 after a brilliant weekend at the Skip Barber Race Series Scholarship Shootout. Held at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca, the Skip Barber Race Series Scholarship Shootout pitted the top drivers from the Skip Barber National, Summer, and Winter series against each other in on and off track evaluations for a top prize of a funded season in the Skip Barber presents the Mazda Summer Series. The event is judged by Skip Barber's top instructors as well as special guests that included Speed TV commentator Bob Varsha, Team USA Scholarship Director Jeremy Shaw and MAZDASPEED Communications Director Dean Case. Hobbs speed and consistency impressed the esteemed panel enough to be awarded fourth prize, a $20,000 scholarship toward the 2012 Skip Barber Presents the Mazda Summer Series Championship.

"I finally felt really comfortable in these cars and confident that I could go fast, so I gave all I could," stated Andrew after being awarded the scholarship. "I really want to say thank you to so many people who have helped me this year, Steve Welk of Linear Sport, Mr. Arden Hetland of Mastertech Vehicle Protection and Mr. Keith Raskin of Prestige Auto Works and of course the whole Skip Barber organization Without their belief and support this would not have been possible. I am really looking forward to 2012 where I am sure we can be a contender for the Championship, but it won’t be easy as always there will be some great competition.”
Hobbs entered the three day long shootout as a bit of an underdog after a checkered season in the Skip Barber Summer Series. The Bayside Wisconsin driver let the judges know straight away that he meant business however. During the first session Hobbs had set the fastest lap of the group by the midway point and was able to maintain the sixth fastest time as the checkered flew.

Day two would see the drivers taking to the track twice. In the second session of the shootout Hobbs took a little to settle down and find his rhythm, which saw him place seventh in the session. For the third timed session the judges decided to throw a curveball at the field by staging a mock race dubbed the "Competitive Module." The field would be lined up by the combined average lap time of the first two sessions which put Hobbs fifth on the grid. At the start of the 10 lap sprint Hobbs lost some momentum and fell back to seventh after the first lap. A methodical run saw the Mastertech backed driver work his way back the fifth position at the end of the module.

As the third day opened Hobbs knew he would have to put in a strong final performance in order to leave a big impression on the gathered judges. To make his run more difficult Hobbs was forced to change cars after his out lap when he discovered a failing clutch. Undeterred Hobbs but in the drive of the season. After a lap to get up to speed Hobbs began lowering his lap times and moving up in the
order. Hobbs would go on to set third fastest lap of the session, just a tenth of a second off of the second best time and backed that up with the fourth fastest average of the session. It was an impressive display for the high school senior and left a favorable impression on the judges as they went to deliberate on the scholarship order.

After the nearly four hours of debate the judges had come to a consensus and awarded Hobbs the fourth place prize worth $20,000 toward the Skip Barber presents the Mazda Summer Series. Hobbs will now spend the off season preparing for a full season assault on the Skip Barber Summer Championship in 2012.

Taking over the family business is a rich tradition in the United States. When the family business is driving racecars at the absolute limit, that tradition takes on a whole new meaning. Andrew Hobbs aims to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and father and become a professional racecar driver. On the track Hobbs has displayed all the traits necessary to compete at the highest levels of motorsports, off track he understands the business of motorsports that will help insure high levels of success for his partners. David Hobbs Honda sponsored triathlete qualifies for 2012 Olympics

Gwen Jorgensen of Milwaukee qualifies for 2012 Olympics

David Hobbs Honda is proud to announce that our sponsored triathlete,
Gwen Jorgensen of Milwaukee, qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in
London this month. Jorgensen, a top track and field athlete while at
UW Madison with a swim background, was recruited by the USA Triathlon
Program and competed in her first triathlon less than two years ago.
This past weekend she finished second in an International Triathlon
Union World Championship Series race, the highest-ever finish for an
American woman, and earned a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic triathlon
team. Jorgensen posted the day's fastest run split and finished the
race in 2 hours, 41 seconds, seven seconds off the winning pace. Her
win guaranteed a country slot for the United States at next year's
London Games.

The USA will take only 2 to 3 athletes to the 2012 Olympic games. And
the local star trained hard for her spot, amping up her training for
the season to 15-25 hours a week combining a routine of swimming,
biking and running.  According to Greg Hobbs, Executive Vice President
of David Hobbs Honda, "its important for our business to support
excellence in our community and Gwen is a shining example of the best
of the best."

In respect to the DHH sponsorship Jorgensen offers, "David Hobbs Honda
is extremely generous and excited about helping the community.  They
gave me a new Honda Insight so I will be able to do more training
because I now have a fuel-efficient car that allows me to get to
workout facilities.  It is a hatchback, allowing me to easily put my
bike in inside.  But It is also environmentally friendly, something
Hobbs Honda and I are both very passionate about."

Andrew Hobbs Scores a Top 10 Result in Skip Barber Race Series Debut

Danville, VA -  Andrew Hobbs scored a sixth place result in his Skip Barber Race Series debut this past weekend.  Driving from the back of the grid at the historic Virginia International Raceway (VIR); Hobbs was able to advance nine positions to place sixth in his first career formula car race.  The result would highlight what was a very productive weekend for the sixteen-year-old Skip Barber rookie.

After spending the off season focusing on his education, Hobbs began his Skip Barber career in the most difficult of conditions on the weekend's opening test day.   The line of storms that rocked the American South brought a morning of showers that forced Hobb's to learn the challenging 3.7 mile VIR track in wet weather conditions.  Undaunted the high school junior took a very methodical approach and built up his comfort level and speed  gradually in the difficult conditions.  Friday's official practice sessions were clear and dry and Hobbs continued his progression, improving his pace each time on the race track.

Hobbs had high hopes for a strong result heading into the only qualifying session in the two race format of the Skip Barber race weekend.  Unfortunately an off on the outside of the high speed turn-17 would relegate Hobb's to the back of the grid after posting the tenth fastest time in the fifteen car field.

An extra night would pass before Hobbs was able to make his race debut.  An accident filled Skip Barber National Championship race forced the day to run long leaving Skip Barber officials no choice but to run the Andrew's race group on Sunday morning.  The wait proved to be useful as Hobbs showed up to work on Sunday.  Headed into turn one on the first lap Hobbs was able to overtake a few cars while avoiding a spinning car to move into the top-ten on the first lap.  After the strong opening lap the M. Nelson and Associates backed driver was able to move through the field, passing cars and taking advantage of other drivers mistakes until he found himself solidly in the sixth position after the races half way point.  Again Hobbs was able to improve his pace and began running the fifth place car down.  Placing himself perfectly for the last lap pass, Hobbs made his move down the back straight but a missed shift stunted his run leaving him prone to attack from the seventh place driver.  In the dash to the finish Hobbs was just beat at the line for sixth by .02 of a second giving the young driver seventh on the track.  A post race penalty would move Hobbs up one more position resulting in a fine sixth place finish in the stout 15 car field.

Sunday afternoon's race number two held a lot of promise for Hobbs after his strong showing in race one.  At the green a conservative start from the sixth position resulted in the lose of a couple of spots on lap one.  Hobbs immediately gave chase to the leaders looking to make up ground.  After reassuming the sixth spot Hobbs found himself in a see-saw battle for the position in the races mid stages.  A pass attempt into VIR's sweeping turn three, a move that had worked earlier in the race, saw Hobbs get pinched into the curb.  In order to avoid car to car contact the Bayside Wisconsin driver spun his car.  The spin and resulting pit stop to check for damage relegated Hobbs to the back with just a few laps to go.  Never one to stop pushing Hobbs continued to charge to the checkered flag and was awarded an 11th place finish for his efforts.

"This weekend was definitely a learning experience," Hobbs said after the weekend.  "I was very happy with race one and naturally a bit disappointed in the spin during race two.  I think we would have had a second top ten for sure if not a shot at a top five finish.  The really good part about the weekend was a was able to find a really good comfort level with the car, which was one of my main goals going into the event.  I can't wait to get back into the car at Lime Rock."

Andrew Hobbs' next Skip Barber race will come the weekend of June 11th at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut.  The David Hobbs Honda backed driver will not be sitting still however as "Drew" will test a 360 sprint car for the first time later in May.   Hobbs will continue to training in karts as well in order to keep sharp for his return the cockpit of the Skip Barber F2000 car in June.

For more information on Andrew Hobbs, please visit www.AndrewHobbsRacing.com or follow him on twitter @AHobbsRacing.

David Hobbs' Notes on 2011 F1

The 2011 season starts with a clean sheet of paper as a number of rule changes were instituted during the off season.

The biggest change is that long time tyre supplier Bridgestone, has been replaced by Pirrelli. This is a huge change and will be a challenge for all the teams to make their cars match the tyres construction and compounds.

The big diffusers have also been banned, so a lot of downforce has gone away, which all the engineers will be trying to make up again.

KERS are being reintroduced. Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems were used by some teams in 2009. Mercedes and Ferrari seemed to have the best systems. They have been brought back to make F1 greener and more relevant. They are like a Hybrid as they store energy which the car throws off in braking and running and can then be released in short bursts to help overtaking.

Last year the driver could change the angle of his front wing. This year this is banned but he can now open the slot in his rear wing. This is also to assist in overtaking, but the rules that apply as to when you can use it are pretty mind numbing and we will have to wait until after the first race to see how well it will work in practice.

Finally, McLaren came up with a device in 2010 called the F duct. This was driver operated and spilled air over the rear wing causing less drag on long straights. It was very dubious from the start as movable aerodynamic devises are not allowed, except of course now the rear wing, however I digress. In spite of everyone's doubts about the legality, nothing was done by the governing body and so by the end of the year everyone had Fducts. Well now they are banned.

In spite of the major technical challenges presented to the teams as we go to press - the Red Bull engineering department seems to have come out completely unphased.

2010 was one of, if not the most exciting and closely fought championship ever, with the ultimate Champ, Sebastian Vettel going into the last round in third place. This was only about the second time in fifty years that this has happened.

Red Bull was certainly the team to beat last year although both Ferrari and McLaren had some very good multi race runs but Red Bull was always strong and won both the drivers and constructors championships. Unfortunately, for the others, that is history looks like it may repeat itself.

The teams are in the middle of a four day test, the last test of the year, at Barcelona, and things are looking very good for Red Bull again. Both drivers have taken turns at being quickest over the last two days and were on top in the previous tests. I would have to say this makes Vettel favourite for the title again as he has more speed in him than Webber.

Now so far we have only seen testing but the real test of course is racing itself so things will become much clearer after the Australian round in two weeks.

So far Red Bull are looking very strong but Ferrari too seem to have come up with a stronger package than last year and Fernando Alonso could have a crack at a third title if car development continues well. He has a great feel for changes and works very well with his engineers at development. Felipe Massa is going to find this a very trying year as he struggles to keep up with Alonso and may well end up driving for his job.

McLaren have got off to a terrible start, they made a lot of radical changes to the car for the 2011 season and the car has not been very fast. Worse it has been very unreliable and they have completed less than half the laps of either Red Bull or Ferrari, both of which have been very reliable. Neither Jenson Button or Lewis Hamilton both World champions, have given up yet, nor have McLaren but if they lose too many points early on it will be impossible to catch up.

Renault had a very different exhaust system on for the first test in Valencia which seemed to work very well, as on the opening day Robert Kubica, one of the four fastest drivers on the grid, set the top time. Disaster struck the team though before the second test as Robert had a huge accident driving a rally car and nearly had his arm torn off. He had many hours of surgery but it is doubtful if he will make the grid this year. His old teammate when they both drove for BMW, Nick Heidfeldt, is filling the seat while Kubica recovers. Nick too has been quite quick in testing, so Renault are in there.

Williams too have made some big changes to their car. They have an ultra small and low gear box.  This allows very low bodywork at the rear, keeping more air over and under the rear wing. They ditched their rookie driver Nico Hulkenberg at the end of last season - in my view a terrible mistake as he showed a lot of form towards the end of the year, taking pole in very bad conditions in Brazil. They replace him with another rookie, last years GP2 champ, Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado. He comes with 15 million Us dollars so it was a bit of a no brainer but he is not the driver that Hulkenberg is.

Mercedes Benz have the same driver line up as before, 7 time World champ Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. This team is run by Ross Brawn, who helped Michael win those championships at Bennetton and Ferrari. Brawn bought the team for one dollar from Honda, who in 2009 funded the team, now with Mercedes power and with Button at the wheel Ross won the world championship again. Mercedes have now bought the team from him no doubt for many millions, so all in all Ross has done very well!! The car has shown some form in testing but according to Ross they need to find another second. That is a lot of time in racing!

Force India also with Mercedes and McLaren running gear has been going quite well but they will be struggling for points. They have taken on Scot Paul Di Resta to join Adrian Sutil as their driver line up. Di Resta won last year's DTM (German Touring Car) championship driving for Mercedes and 4 years ago beat Sebastian Vettel to the F3 title so the lad obviously has speed. Will he be able to show it in a Force India though. His main task will be to beat Adrian Sutil. Di Resta is the cousin of Dario Franchitti, another Scot with an Italian name. Dario is the current Indy 500 and Indycar series champ.

Scuderia Torro Rosso with their Ferrari engines have been showing some pace. Their drivers remain the same. Sebastian Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari, this team will be duking it out with the Sauber team, also with Ferrari power for best of the rest. Sauber have the youngest driver line. Mexico is again on the grid with driver Sergio Perez, one of last years top GP2 drivers, he has big backing from the worlds richest man - Carlos Slim.

The rest I'm afraid will probably remain the same as last year, all newcomers to F1 in 2010 and none of these teams scored a point. They are Lotus, which now has Renault power not Cosworth, Hispania Racing with Cosworth and Virgin racing, also with Cosworth, I suspect all these teams will find it very difficult to make any meaningful impression on the championship this year. Lotus with Renault probably have the best chance.

Looking forward to another exciting season. See you on SPEED.
